Founding Symbolism of theCenter-Right in Turkish Politics and The Democratic Party: Yeter! Söz Milletindir!, The Menderes Tractor and Concrete-driven Urbanization
Abstract
This article aims to reveal thefundamental axes of the founding center-right symbolism by focusing on the Democratic Party (DP) and to highlight the symbolic elements it produced. Incontrast to the secular and Western political symbolism produced by the hegemonic cultural project of the early republican era, the center-right symbolism that developed under the leadership of the DP is examined in this articlethrough three axes. These correspond, respectively, to the axes ofanti-leftism, closeness to Atatürk (yet distance from the CHP), and similarityto the United States. The article details the slogan “Yeter! Söz Milletindir!”(Enough! The Nation Has The Say!) as well as the tractor and concrete-drivenurbanization as typical examples of DP symbolism that intersect with theseaxes. By situating the DP’s representational role in 1950s politics within thecontext of symbolism and adopting a post-positivist methodology, the article subjects varioussources -including books, reports, articles, newspaper columns, andpoliticians’ texts- to discourse analysis. The article’s most significant conclusion is thatthe center-right symbolism, shaped by symbolic elements maintained, restructured,or produced during the DP period, possesses a founding quality and has stronglyinfluenced both subsequent right-wing politics and Turkish politics in general.
