Animal Farm by George Orwell as a Totalitarian Regime: A Character Analysis

Abstract

A totalitarian regime is not a nostalgia left in the past. It is a political understanding that constantly makes its presence felt, stemming from the tense relationship of modern man with freedom. The common view of thinkers who express their criticisms of the totalitarian regimes is that totalitarianism is the absolute transfer of a person’s own reason and morality to the state. The understanding of freedom, on the other hand, is the complete fulfillment of the duties assigned by the totalitarian regime. Criticism of totalitarian regimes is not only a critique of a political system, but also a critique of the state of mind of modern humans. This state of mind was examined in the finest detail by George Orwell in his work Animal Farm, where he explained how a transition to a totalitarian regime occurs through the characters in the book. The characters in Animal Farm are divided into two groups as main (the rulers) and secondary (the ruled). The main characters, as the leader and governing cadre, are Old Major, Snowball, Napoleon, and Squealer. The secondary characters are Boxer, Mollie, Mr. Jones, Benjamin, Clover, Muriel, Moses, and the dogs under Napoleon’s protection. Orwell also treats each setting and event as a separate character.
