The Israel–Palestine Conflict in Libertarian Theory: Debates on Non-Intervention in Anarcho-Capitalism and Objectivism

Abstract

This study examines the philosophical foundations of the approaches to foreign policy adopted by anarcho-capitalism and objectivism and discusses why the Israeli Palestinian conflict is a point of division between the two schools of thought. The primary aim of the study is to examine the Israel–Palestine issue within the framework of anarcho-capitalism and objectivism—two distinct interpretations of libertarian thought—and to assess the normative, theoretical and historical background of this divergence. The study argues that, despite both approaches sharing the same presuppositions regarding individual liberty, property rights and the coercive power of the state, they arrive at entirely different conclusions regarding foreign policy and the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Anarcho-capitalism opposes the regional policies of the US and Israel by focusing on the state’s war-producing nature, non-interventionism, the principle of non-aggression, and historical violations of property rights; whereas Objectivism regards US hegemony, the defence of free societies, and interventionist foreign policy as a moral imperative. Anarcho-capitalism, which emphasises non-intervention, is more explanatory and rights-based in terms of normative consistency, theoretical coherence and the assessment of historical processes. Objectivism, which advocates intervention under certain conditions, is subject to various criticisms both theoretically and in terms of its internal consistency; however, it points to a small but influential group within the realm of realpolitik that develops interpretations and assessments of current foreign policy debates.
