The Relationship between Economic Freedom and Economic Development: Empirical Analysis for Newly Industrialized Countries

Abstract

A seminal issue in the economic literature pertains to the nexus between economic freedoms and economic development. Although theoretical debates on the subject have taken place throughout the history of economics, empirical studies have increased in number since the 1990s, when economic freedoms became measurable. Nevertheless, despite the proliferation of applied studies in this field, a consensus on the relationship between economic freedoms and economic development remains elusive. The present study undertakes an examination of the issue in question by means of econometric tests for newly industrialized countries (NICs), with the countries under consideration including Turkey, Thailand, Mexico, Malaysia, India, South Africa, the Philippines, China, Brazil and Argentina. The data of the sample countries for the period 1995-2021 were analysed using Kónya (2006) panel causality test. The findings of the analysis indicate a unidirectional causality relationship running from HDI to IEF for Thailand, Mexico, and South Africa. Evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship between IEF and HDI for Malaysia and India. Conversely, no causality relationship was identified for Turkey, China, the Philippines, Brazil, and Argentina.
